With the growing popularity of rTMS in the treatment of depression, many individuals suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are also asking: “Does this method work for me as well?” An honest answer requires a closer look at the existing evidence. To understand the basis of this method, also see the article What is rTMS?.
Current Status of Scientific Evidence
Unlike depression and OCD, for which rTMS has stronger official approvals, the evidence for Generalized Anxiety is still developing and less definitive. This does not mean it is ineffective, but rather that the available data is not yet as extensive and repetitive as that for depression.
Why is this distinction important?
A responsible clinic should not promote rTMS for generalized anxiety with the same certainty as for depression. Scientific honesty means stating that this area is still under study.
Under what conditions might it be considered?
- Generalized anxiety accompanied by overlapping depression (which itself is a candidate for rTMS approval)
- Inadequate response to standard treatments (medication + CBT)
- As part of a combined treatment plan, under the close supervision of a psychiatrist
What other options are available?
For generalized anxiety, CBT and standard medication treatment remain the first line of treatment. Also read the article CES in Anxiety to learn about another neuromodulation option with relatively different evidence; if you also have depression accompanying anxiety, the article rTMS for medication-resistant depression is helpful.
Summary for Patients
If you have generalized anxiety, rTMS may be an option in the future, but currently, its evidence is not as strong as that for depression. The best course is to consult directly with a psychiatrist about the appropriate options for your situation.
